Jim Woodring
Jim Woodring has turned 50. Born in Los Angeles in 1952, he suffered hallucinations and other psychological malfunctions as a child. He never attended art school but started drawing comics in his early teens, using his visions for inspiration.
One day he was clearing the garbage to make a living, the next he was employed in an animation studio, but still unhappy due to the poor quality of the studio’s output. With the success of his first “illustrated
autojournal”, JIM, Woodring decided that he would be better off working alone as a full-time cartoon artist.
And so it was to be. Enter Sony Creative and Woodring is soon making Time capsule toys that are sold in Gachas (vending machines for small toys) all over the world. His toys take the physical form of the surreal visions seen in his comics, all initially inspired by the workings of his mind.
