Sam Buxton
Born in 1972, London designer Sam Buxton graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in 1999. His idea to use miniature stainless steel sculptures as business cards to reflect his work as a 3D designer and to offer potential clients more than just a name and a website, was a good one. In 2001 it was displayed at the Design Museum’s “Design Now – London” exhibition, and with each card capable of being folded into a detailed miniature 3D office, it didn’t take long for manufacturers to snap up his idea and advance it to mass production.
Sam Buxton wants to “use industrial manufacturing techniques in new ways” while “interfacing between the living body and the built environment” thereby breaking down boundaries between design, science and art.
In 2004 he was one of 4 short-listed designers for the Design Museum’s Designer of the Year award. He has worked for brands such as Kenzo, Habitat and Eurolounge, to name but a few. But most importantly, his success in securing well-paid commercial projects has enabled him to work on projects he truly believes in.
