Ron English
It’s best not to reveal the precise whereabouts of Ron English, although I can say that two towers are missing from his hometown skyline. Ok, controversy aside… English considers himself to be a simple folk artist. We know that he’s a brilliant painter, putting his neck on the line with comments like “I damn sure didn’t make the rules, I damn sure won't live by them!", but who is he really? One thing’s for sure: Ron English is one of the most contentious artists to emerge from the 1990s. A high concept iconoclast, his art has appeared on “fake” billboards all over the USA, countless print media and the hysterical society-attacking, burger intake study, Super Size Me.
The illegal billboards are free to look at: Is this English’s contribution to his folk? Well, part of it - his “reinvention of Modernism in his own image and attitude” is a more personal accomplishment; however the process of “putting some English in it” will shock and excite all lovers of critical art, transforming original pieces into breathtaking examples of post-modernist critique. Loaded with his generation’s iconography, he salvages American symbology using pop imagery as metaphor. Just check out English’s latest vinyl creation, Rabbbit for some twisted cartoon corruption.
